In an effort to make my songwriting process less “precious” I did this exercise.
1. Sat down.
2. Picked up guitar.
3. Wrote a song.
4. Recorded it on my phone.
5. Posted it to the internet.
My time for today’s effort was 55 min. from step 1 to step 5 and all done while I was “supposed” to be cleaning my house in preparation for a visit from my Mom. Of course, it’s in its roughest and rawest form and might not even have guitar once it’s recorded for real. Or the same words. Who knows. But here’s my heartfelt share for today.
xoxo
You’re at the start of a storm.
All still and warm
Like arms that surround me.
Cloudy skies above.
Wind blowing deep and rough
While the sun confounds me.
Let it rain. Let it rain.
I can take everything you’ve got
Except refrain.
Let the skies open up
without restraining.
You can weather any storm
Just let it rain.
This could pass us by
Untouched but not unscathed
And knowing that we’re living the lie.
I would trade it all
To escape a lifetime of running away
Afraid of the fall.
Let it rain. Let it rain.
I can take everything you’ve got
Except refrain.
If you can turn your heart up
Like a flame.
You can weather any storm
Just let it rain.
